Atlanta Falcons-Detroit Lions Preview

Coming off a victory against the Carolina Panthers, the Falcons will go on the road to play the Detroit Lions, looking to earn a win against Detroit for the first time since 2005. The Falcons (3-3) have been tested on the road for most of the season and this is a huge statement game against one of the young and rising teams in the NFL. The Lions (5-1) lead by star quarterback Matthew Stafford and one of the best receivers in the league in Calvin Johnson is the biggest story of this season and they have yet to earn a big victory over a NFC contender such as Atlanta. On the other side, the Falcons want to earn a win against one of the best teams through the first six weeks and take some momentum heading into the bye week. Here are some of my keys to victory over the Lions, key match-ups, and my final prediction.

KEYS TO VICTORY OVER THE LIONS:

1.Establish the run with Michael Turner:
Last week, the Falcons returned to the style that was very successful for them in 2010, running the football. Against Carolina, Michael Turner posted his best numbers of the season as he rushed for (139) yards and (2) touchdowns in the 31-17 Falcons victory. Michael Turner, whether many fans want to admit it or not, is the key to the Falcons offense having success against some of the best teams in the NFL. This week, the Falcons have an opportunity to continue their dominance on the ground against this Lions defense. Currently, the Detroit Lions are (26th) in the NFL in rushing yards surrendered (777), (25th) in the NFL in rushing yards given per game (129.5) and that will pay off as a major advantage to the Falcons offense. Also, despite giving up many yards on the ground, their defense have only allowed (2) rushing touchdowns to this point; however, they have yet to face a physical running back who could pressure their defensive line towards keeping them contained from scoring touchdowns in goal line positions. Also, the Falcons need to include Jacquizz Rodgers in the rushing attack in order to keep Michael Turner fresh throughout the game and to balance the tempo of the running game.

2. Control the tempo of the game and quiet the crowd:
Last season, the Falcons were very successful of controlling the tempo and momentum of their games and it helped them win many games during the 2010 season. The Falcons must focus on establishing a consistent offensive strategy that will succeed for them on Sunday and keep the intense Ford Field crowd out of the game. Coming into this match-up, Detroit currently ranks (21st) in the NFL with the time of possession allowed by their opponents (30:44) and Atlanta can definitely use this to their advantage because this team is built to be a physical, clock-grinding football team and many teams around the league struggles to compete with this style of football. The Falcons offense must control themselves and avoid making any offensive penalties. Two weeks ago in their win against the Chicago Bears, the crowd helped force nine false start penalties against Chicago's offense and the Falcons can't succumb to the same mistakes. The Falcons already have (36) penalties through six games on offense, which is very high for this team who committed the lowest amount of penalties in the NFL last season (58).

3. Falcons offensive line must protect Matt Ryan against the Lions defensive line:
Over the past two seasons, the story of the Detroit Lions defensive line lead by Ndamukong Suh is emerging as one of the best units in the NFL and they are gaining league-wide respect for their effective play. The Falcons offensive line have definitely improved since their rough start to the season. In the past two games, Matt Ryan have not been sacked; however, he continues to take a lot of hits from opposing defenders. Heading into the matchup with the Lions, the Falcons offensive line have allowed (40) quarterback hits, which is the (3rd) most in the NFL. On Sunday, Atlanta must contain the Lions front unit. Heading into this matchup, the Lions have forced (14) sacks and forced (6) fumbles. Atlanta must make sure they don't give this defense the chance to make big plays against them up front.

4. The Falcons must control the game and frustrate the Lions mindset:
The Falcons must establish their offensive gameplan early in this matchup and prevent this Lions defense from interrupting their dominance. Atlanta's physical style could be a huge disadvantage for the Lions defense due to their physical rushing attack and ability to open opportunities up for Matt Ryan and the Atlanta passing game. The Lions defense, despite having a great start, is still a young team and once you interrupt their mindset, they are vulnerable towards making mistakes. Through their first six games, the Lions currently rank (1st) in the NFL in penalties with (60) and this could hurt their defense from having a solid plan to attack Atlanta's offense. The Falcons must play their style of football and avoid giving them opportunities by committing offensive penalties.

5. Defense must force the Lions to more three and outs:
The Falcons defense must force the Lions offense off the field when third down opportunities are presented. Defensive coordinator Brian Van Gorder and the Falcons must figure out a scheme to prevent the Lions from converting many third downs in Sunday's match-up. Last week, in the win against the Panthers, the Falcons was (8-12) on allowing their opponents to earn a first down and extend the drive, which keep Carolina alive for most of the game. The Falcons have to control this issue on their defense. Entering week 7, the Falcons are last in the NFL in third down conversion percentage (49%) and this total needs to decrease. Atlanta needs to use a man to man defense to prevent opposing offensive teams from making clutch plays to extend their offensive drive. Detroit, on the other hand, is the fourth worst team in the league on converting third-down opportunities at (30%). Atlanta must capitalize on this statistic and allow their defense to prevent the Lions offense from extending drives and scoring points.

KEY MATCH-UPS:

1.Brandon Pettigrew vs Falcons coverage scheme:
The Falcons will have another young and explosive tight end to face in Pettigrew this weekend and they must battle him in a man to man battle in order to limit his production for the Lions defense. Atlanta's defense have struggled to contain tight ends this season and they must shut down the middle of the field, which have been a huge problem for the Falcons this season. Last week, the Falcons struggled to defend Greg Olsen and Jeremy Shockey as the two tight ends combined for (9) catches and (102) yards just from those two and Pettigrew is the type of tight end who can make a huge impact on any football game. The Falcons iinebackers and safeties must contain the Lions offense from allowing the third-year player to establish an impact on the game.

2.Tony Gonzalez vs Lions coverage scheme:
Just like the Falcons, the Lions defense have struggled to contain tight ends during the season and this matchup will be a huge advantage to Atlanta. This season, the Lions had a hard time defending Jason Witten and Kellen Winslow and on Sunday, their task will become tougher against this veteran tight end who can make clutch plays at any point of a game. Many opposing defense have a difficult time defending Gonzalez and the Falcons need to use him and expose their defense in order to keep the Falcons offense in a good position to score points and win the game. Tony Gonzalez is a key factor towards helping Matt Ryan and the passing attack establish a solid impact on the Lions defense on Sunday. Expect the Falcons to get the ball to their veteran tight end and allow him to open up opportunities for Atlanta.

3.Roddy White vs. Chris Houston:
For the first time since being traded from Atlanta, Chris Houston will get the opportunity to face his former teammate in a regular season matchup and both players will be out to prove a statement in Sunday's game. Chris Houston, the fifth year corner back from Arkansas, is having his best season as a NFL player, Houston have made (30) tackles and have already set a career high in interceptions with (3), but this will be his first major test of the year. As for Roddy White, his production for the Falcons season is sort of disappointing and this could be the game for him to breakout and still show the rest of the NFL that he is one of the best wide receivers around the league today. Despite beating the Chiefs back in Week 2, the cornerback surrendered (101) yards to Dwayne Bowe, which was the only challenge that he have faced this season and now, Roddy White could use this game for an opportunity to make a statement that could spark him to a successful second half of the NFL season.

4. Brent Grimes vs Calvin Johnson:
After containing Panthers receiver Steve Smith to just (66) yards receiving on Sunday, the Falcons will give their young corner back the opportunity to contain one of the best wide receivers in the NFL today in Calvin Johnson. Johnson, the fifth year receiver from Georgia Tech, is having a major season. Johnson ranks (5th) in the NFL in receiving yards with (564) yards and leads the league in touchdown receptions with (9) and will be the key towards helping the Lions remain in a close game with the Falcons on Sunday. As for Grimes, the Falcons have seen him contain some of the best receivers in the game and his efforts on Sunday could be the determining factor in securing Atlanta a road victory at Ford Field. This match-up will be the X-Factor in which team leaves the game on Sunday with a win.

5. Dunta Robinson vs Nate Burleson:
Despite the fact that the veteran corner back will not be matched against Calvin Johnson, Robinson still face a tough task of defending a play making receiver such as Burleson. Nate Burleson, currently in his (9th) year in the NFL is a consistent play maker and will have opportunities to make plays. Robinson must contain this receiver from establish an impact on the game. Although he is not the play-maker that Calvin Johnson is, he can turn a small reception into a big play for the Lions offense. The Falcons defense need to contain their receiving core in order to prevent Detroit from having a huge game in the passing attack.

PREDICTION:
This game will be a competitive football affair on Sunday and I expect both teams to give their best shot to win this statement game in Week 7. The Falcons will get over 100 yards rushing from Michael Turner and the Lions will keep the Falcons in a close game throughout the football game. Atlanta will win this game late in the fourth quarter and go to (4-3) heading into the bye week as Detroit will suffer their second straight home loss (5-2). Until next time, FALCONS RISE UP!!!

Falcons-Panthers Recap and Analysis

Coming off a heartbreaking defeat to the Green Bay Packers, the Falcons (2-3) entering the game, needed to win their next game to earn another NFC win and keep their hopes alive for the 2011 season. Their next opponent, the (1-4) Carolina Panthers, led by rookie sensation Cam Newton was looking for a huge win, after blowing a 4th quarter lead and losing to the New Orleans Saints. Atlanta faced off against Carolina for the first time this season and would look to earn their second home win of 2011. The Falcons opened the game with the football; however, they could not score any points as they would go three and out and punt to Carolina. On the Panthers first possession, their offense moved the chains from their own (12) yard line into Atlanta territory; however, the defense held them to a three and out and Carolina took a 3-0 lead after Olindo Mare kicked a (42) yard field goal. Carolina's first possession was a 13-play, (67) yards drive. On the ensuing Atlanta possession, the Falcons capitalized on a 7-play, (81) yard drive that ended with Michael Turner scoring a one-yard touchdown at the end of the first quarter to give Atlanta a 7-3 lead heading into the second quarter. Carolina would answer with a 9-play, (81) yard drive which ended with a one-yard Jonathan Stewart touchdown to give the Panthers a 10-7 lead midway through the second quarter. Once again, the Falcons would answer Carolina by executing on a 12-play, (95) yard drive which ended with a one-yard touchdown pass from Matt Ryan to Ovie Mughelli to give Atlanta a 14-10 lead with less than four minutes remaining in the quarter. On the next Panthers drive, Carolina was moving the football deep into Atlanta's territory and made it down to the Falcons 10-yard line; however, on first and goal, Cam Newton's intended pass for Steve Smith was tipped and intercepted by Brent Grimes to end their hopes of taking a lead at halftime. In the third quarter, Carolina used most of the quarter to execute on a  13-play, (85) yard drive, which ended with Cam Newton rushing for a (14) yard touchdown to give the Panthers a 17-14 lead. After Atlanta went three and out on their next possession, the Falcons defense stepped up and made a huge sack on Cam Newton to force Carolina to punt. The Falcons took their next offensive possession into the fourth quarter and would end their 8- play, (43) yard drive that ended with a (24) yard field goal from Matt Bryant to tie the game at 17-17 early in the fourth quarter. After the Falcons defense held the Panthers to three and out, Atlanta capitalized on a 10-play, (60) yard drive which ended with Matt Ryan scoring for a one yard touchdown to give the Falcons a 24-17 lead midway through the fourth quarter. On the ensuing Carolina possession, the second play of the drive would end with Corey Peters making a one-hand interception to give Atlanta the football at the Panthers 38-yard line. The Falcons would capitalize and put the Panthers away on a 8-play, (39) yard drive which ended with Michael Turner scoring to give Atlanta a 31-17 lead. The Falcons won 31-17 to improve their record to 3-3 on the season and due to the Saints loss, Atlanta now sits within one game of first place.

STANDOUT PLAYERS OF THE GAME:

1. MICHAEL TURNER:
Atlanta's star running back was back to his old form against the Panthers. Turner ended the day with (27) carries for (139) yards and (2) touchdowns, which was a normal outing for him against the Panthers defense. Yesterday was the second time this season that Turner rushed for multiple touchdowns in a game and the third time he have scored two or more touchdowns against the Panthers in a game. As much as Falcons fans want to see a balanced version of their offense, this offense must have Turner making a huge impact in the rushing attack in order to get the best Falcons offense on the field in a game. Michael Turner continues his dominance against the Carolina Panthers, yesterday's efforts marks the fifth time in Turner's fourth year career that he have posted over (100) yards rushing against this team. In the last five matchups, Turner has averaged (108) yards rushing per game and is scoring (2) touchdowns as well. When Michael Turner can post numbers like these, the Atlanta Falcons are hard to beat because this provides the opportunity to balance the offensive attack.

2. HARRY DOUGLAS:
After losing Julio Jones in last week's loss against the Packers, Douglas was given the opportunity to start at wide receiver. Harry Douglas, who was looking for a breakout game received his wish as he lead the Falcons in receiving yesterday with two receptions for (57) yards, including a key (34) yard reception on the possession that lead to Matt Ryan's one yard touchdown run. Harry Douglas is a very talented receiver and compliments Roddy White and Julio Jones in the Falcons receiving core. Douglas could have made a bigger impact on the game; unfortunately, two passes that could have been huge plays for the Falcons offense were overthrown and Douglas could not get there in time. As the season progresses, expect the Falcons offense to use more of Douglas or "HD" as our fans call him because he can provide a big play from a small reception in the Falcons passing attack.

3. BRENT GRIMES:
During the entire season, Grimes have been the most consistent member of the Falcons secondary; however, he did not have an interception during the first five games of the season. Grimes made a critical interception as the Panthers was marching towards the end zone late in the second half to halt the Panthers from taking a halftime lead. Grimes picked a perfect time to make the first big play of the season for the fifth year corner back from Shippensburg. Grimes second quarter interception was a key moment in the Falcons win and potentially saved the Panthers from having a chance to win the game. Grimes ended the day with (4) tackles and one interception.

Things to Adjust for Next Week:

1.Defensive pressure on the opposing quarterbacks:
In the first three quarters, the Falcons defense struggled to apply pressure on Cam Newton and the Panthers was given the opportunity to make an effective impact that kept their hopes alive for most of the game. Atlanta must apply tough pressure towards their opponents and disrupt their offensive flow because Carolina was 8-10 on third down conversions in the first three quarters and this extended drives for the Panthers and helped them score 17 points. Atlanta's defense made the adjustments and stopped them in the final quarter; however, they must consistently get after the opposing quarterbacks for all four quarters especially after some of the best in the NFL. Defensive coordinator Brian Van Gorder and the Falcons defense must create a scheme to allow John Abraham and Ray Edwards to force themselves into the backfield and earn sacks.

2. Matt Ryan's timing on his deep ball accuracy:
Matt Ryan had a decent game yesterday for the Falcons as he posted (163) passing yards and scored (2) touchdowns, one was passing and the other was rushing. However, there were two huge missed opportunities during the game as Matt Ryan overthrew Harry Douglas on two key passes that could have resulted in (14) points. This season, his accuracy down the field is not the best and he must set himself up with time to make those huge completions for the Falcons offense. Another thing that Ryan must adjust is his timing because sometimes he will throw the ball a little too early or too late when attempting to throw the ball over 20 yards. Matt Ryan's inaccuracy and timing on a deep ball have been one of his struggles even going back to his days at Boston College; however, as the season continues, expect Ryan to make those adjustments.

3. Limit offensive penalties:
As the season continues, the Falcons must stop earning penalties that halts some of the offensive possessions during a game. Through their first six games, the Falcons have (36) offensive penalties, which is currently 15th most in the NFL. Last season, Atlanta was the least penalized offense in the league and that must be adjusted because you can cost yourself points and other opportunities by making mistakes during a offensive drive. This was a key factor in last week's loss against the Packers because if you continue to make mistakes like those, this will affect the flow of the Falcons offense.

4. Roddy White must step up for the rest of the season:
Last season, Roddy White was one of the best receivers in the NFL and was a defensive mismatch for any team. This season, with the exception of the Tampa Bay game, White's effectiveness have decreased and his presence is absent in the Falcons offense. Yesterday, White posted (2) receptions for (21) yards and this is not your normal Roddy White game. Despite his struggles, White still ranks (8th) in the NFL with (34) receptions; however, he ranks (24th) in the NFL with only (373) receiving yards. With the loss of Julio Jones for a few weeks, it is time to see the All-Pro receiver make his dominance known on the Falcons offense and provide a huge spark for Atlanta as their season continues. Expect Roddy White to make some adjustments heading into the rest of the year because he is still one of the key contributors to Atlanta's offense.

FINAL THOUGHTS:
The Falcons played their best fourth quarter this season and finished the game when the opportunity was presented. Atlanta's offense returned to their 2010 form as Michael Turner established his dominance on the ground and when this portion of the Falcons offense is clicking, this is one of the best teams in the NFL. Atlanta's secondary improved yesterday as they limited the Cam Newton to Steve Smith tandem and they should have confidence heading into their next matchup, the (5-1) Detroit Lions. The Falcons will now head on the road before their bye week and look to earn a huge win and make a statement against one of the best teams in the league. Until next time, FALCONS RISE UP!!!

Packers-Falcons Preview

After coming off the road, the Atlanta Falcons (2-2) will return home to face the defending Super Bowl Champion Green Bay Packers (4-0) in a prime-time match and looks to earn revenge on this team. Last season, the sixth seeded Packers stunned the top seeded Falcons at home in the divisional playoffs 48-21 to end the magical 13-3 campaign that Atlanta had in 2010. In the regular season, the Falcons have won their last two match ups against Aaron Rodgers and the Packers and will look to keep their perfect record against the defending champs this weekend. The Falcons will look to start a winning streak after earning a close road victory against the Seattle Seahawks 30-28 in a must-win game and now this will be a huge test for Atlanta. Sunday will be the second of four prime time matches for the Falcons this season, their previous game was a 38-35 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles. This blog will explain some of the  factors to victory, key matchups, and my game prediction.

KEYS TO VICTORY OVER THE PACKERS:

1. Establish the running game against the Packers defense
Despite the Packers having a (4-0) season, their defense is struggling to defend the run and last  week they surrendered (100) yards rushing against Broncos running back Willis McGahee despite winning in a blowout. This week, the Falcons must get Michael Turner and their rushing attack going in order to help their offense create a huge impact on Sunday's game. Last season, in the Falcons 20-17 victory against the Packers, Michael Turner had a huge game for the offense as he posted (110) rushing yards and a rushing touchdown and it forced the Green Bay defense to respect Turner's effectiveness and their aggression was limited due to the strong balance the Falcons brought in that victory. However, against the Packers in the postseason, Atlanta completely abandoned the running game after the first quarter and without establishing the rushing attack, the offense was forced to rely on their passing game. In this match up, it's very important that the Falcons establish their dominance on the ground and create opportunities for Michael Turner and Jacquizz Rodgers to have a impact on the game. This season, Green Bay is (2nd) best in the NFL against opposing running games; however, they struggled against Michael Turner and this game will be up to the veteran running back to establish himself against the aggressive Packers defense.

2. Matt Ryan must use all of his offensive weapons against the Packers defense
Coming off his best performance of the season against Seattle last week, Matt Ryan must utilize  his explosive receiving core and take Green Bay's aggressiveness of defense away from them on Sunday. This season, the Packers defense is ranked (31st) in the NFL with passing yards surrendered in a game (335.8) and the Falcons need to get Roddy White and Julio Jones going in this prime time matchup. Jones, coming off his second straight (100) yard receiving game is making a huge impact in the Falcons passing attack this year. Matt Ryan must give his rookie receiver good passes in order to keep Atlanta's offense going on Sunday because last year in the playoffs, Green Bay's defense made it tough for Roddy White and Tony Gonzalez to have any impact against them and Jones was drafted to the Falcons as an option to produce big offensive plays at a faster rate. Also, the Packers struggled against some of the quickest receivers in the league through their first four games as they surrendered over (100) receiving yards to New Orleans Saints receiver Devery Henderson, Carolina Panthers star receiver Steve Smith, and Denver Broncos receiver Brandon Lloyd. Julio Jones could make a huge impact on the outcome of Sunday's matchup if Matt Ryan is able to have an effective effort from his young receiver. Also, the Falcons need to give Harry Douglas opportunities on Sunday because on the opposing side, you will see the Packers use all of their receiving core and the Falcons must make themselves unpredictable against Dom Capers and the Packers defensive unit.

3. The offensive line must protect Matt Ryan
Last week, the Falcons offensive line had a great game and did not allow a sack for the first time this season in the victory against the Seahawks and they will need to establish a impact on the Green Bay defense in order to protect Matt Ryan and allow the Falcons offense to give Green Bay problems. Despite struggling to defend the passing game this season, the Packers are tied with Buffalo Bills for the most interceptions in the NFL through four games with (8) and their defense also is tied for (8th) in the league in sacks with (11.0) so the Atlanta offensive line must contain Clay Matthews and the rest of the Packers defense from getting to Matt Ryan and they must limit their chances of getting hits on Ryan on Sunday night. Coming into the game, the Falcons have allowed the (3rd) most quarterback hits in the league with (28) so the Packers will look to blitz the Falcons and try to contain Matt Ryan from having any impact.

4. The Falcons defense must pressure and SACK Aaron Rodgers
Atlanta is facing one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL on Sunday Night and he is a mismatch for any defense that faces the Green Bay offense and the Falcons have to get after Rodgers in order to stop him from making a major impact. During the playoffs, Atlanta pressured the Packers; however, they missed critical sacks and Rodgers was given extra time to keep his offense going and to make plays under pressure, which turned out to be a killer for Atlanta's defensive unit. On Sunday, John Abraham and Ray Edwards must bring an aggressive strategy to prevent the sixth year quarterback from attacking the Falcons secondary like he was able to last time these two teams faced off. Aaron Rodgers is currently (2nd) in the NFL in touchdown passes with (12) , (1st) in the NFL with a quarterback rating of a staggering (124.6), (4th) in the NFL with (331.2) passing yards per game, and (1st) in the NFL with a completion percentage of (73.0) and the Falcons defensive line have to prevent him from making a major impact on Sunday night's game. Coming into the Falcons game, the passing defense is ranked (24th) with (275.5) and have only sacked opposing quarterbacks (5) times and on Sunday, that will be a huge factor in the Packers-Falcons game is to pressure Rodgers and make it difficult for him to make any plays in the Falcons game. The Falcons could force Aaron Rodgers into interceptions by applying pressure as Atlanta is currently ranked (5th) in the NFL with picks and forcing turnovers can help the Falcons win the game.

KEY MATCHUPS:

Falcons Offensive Line vs Green Bay 3-4 Defense:
Atlanta's offensive line must provide the best protection for the entire Falcons offense against one of the best defenses in the NFL. Dom Capers is one of the best coordinators in the league and that defense have many playmakers such as Clay Matthews, Charles Woodson, and Tramon Williams and they will bring pressure at Matt Ryan and try to force him into turnovers. Green Bay have forced (14) turnovers through the first four games of the NFL season and Atlanta must make smart decisions on Sunday Night. Coming off their best game of the year, the Falcons offensive line must consistently block for Matt Ryan in order to secure a win.

Julio Jones vs Tramon Williams:
Last season, the Falcons saw Williams end their hopes as he celebrated an interception in the playoffs; however, this season the Green Bay corner back will have a huge challenge trying to defend explosive rookie Julio Jones. As Charles Woodson will be matched up against Roddy White, this will give the opportunity for this young rookie wide receiver to make a huge impact on the game. The Packers defense have struggled against quick receivers with play-making abilities so far as Steve Smith and Brandon Lloyd both accounted for (150+) yards receiving efforts. Jones is having a huge start to his NFL career and he will be one of the key factors that will help Atlanta win on Sunday.

Tony Gonzalez vs Packers safeties:
This final matchup could be huge in securing a victory for the Falcons because they need to get their veteran tight end involved in the Falcons offense. Gonzalez will provide a mismatch for the Packers secondary due to the loss of Nick Collins at safety, this will give Matt Ryan the chances to give him the ball and allow him to make a impact on the passing game. This season, the Packers have struggled to contain tight ends and using Tony Gonzalez in Atlanta's offense will be a difference maker for the outcome of the game. In their last regular season matchup, Gonzalez was clutch as he posted (6) catches for (51) yards as he came up with a huge 4th down conversion, which set himself up to score a touchdown pass before halftime and give Atlanta the lead. In this match-up, Tony Gonzalez will be a huge factor towards making the Falcons offense effective and consistent.

FINAL PREDICTION:
Falcons fans will sweat to the end as Aaron Rodgers and Matt Ryan will duel it out in front of a national television audience and a sell-out crowd at the Georgia Dome as the Falcons look to earn revenge on the team who ended their great 2010 season. Michael Turner will surpass the (100) yard rushing mark and provide a major factor in helping the Falcons earn a close win. This game will be decided by a Matt Bryant field goal late in the fourth quarter as Atlanta wins 24-21 and improve to 3-2. Until the post-game report, FALCONS RISE UP!!!!

Falcons-Seahawks Recap and Analysis

The Atlanta Falcons (2-2), coming off a close 16-13 loss in Tampa Bay traveled to Seattle for their last road game against the Seahawks before coming home for two straight games. The Seahawks opened the game with the ball and went three and out and punted to the Falcons who took over at the Seattle 28-yard line. The Falcons capitalized on a (12) play, (72) yard drive which successfully ended with a one-yard touchdown pass from Matt Ryan to Tony Gonzalez to put the Falcons up 7-0. After both teams traded three and out possessions, Tavaris Jackson made a costly interception to Curtis Lofton, which placed Atlanta into Seahawks territory. On the ensuing drive, the Falcons capitalized on a (4) play, (37) yard drive that ended with a (21) yard touchdown run by Michael Turner to give the Falcons a commanding 14-0 lead early in the second quarter. On the next Seattle drive, the Seahawks responded by connecting on a (52) yard touchdown pass from Tavaris Jackson to Sidney Rice to put the Seattle within seven points of the Falcons. Their drive took (4) plays and (84) yards as Seattle made the score 14-7 in favor of Atlanta. The Falcons responded by taking their next drive, which was (11) plays and (44) yards which ended with Michael Turner scoring his second rushing touchdown of the game and gave the Falcons a 21-7 lead late in the second quarter. After the Seahawks went three and out, the Falcons got the ball before halftime and moved the ball into field goal range as Matt Bryant nailed a (47) yard field goal attempt to give Atlanta a 24-7 lead at the half. In the third quarter, the Falcons opened the half with the football and took the (5) play, (60) yard drive into Seattle territory; but, had to eventually settle for a (50) yard Matt Bryant field goal to put Atlanta up 27-7. However, the Seahawks gained momentum and went on a 14-0 run by scoring on a (6) yard touchdown pass from Tavaris Jackson to Mike Williams, and after the Falcons and Seahawks traded three and out possessions, Seattle trimmed Atlanta's lead to single digits as Marshawn Lynch ran for an (11) yard touchdown to make the score 27-21 headed into the fourth quarter. In the final quarter, Atlanta moved the ball on a (13) play, (57) yard drive that ended with another Matt Bryant field goal of (42) yards that made the Falcons lead at 30-21. Once again, the Seahawks refused to give up and took their next drive down the field and ended with a (8) yard touchdown pass from Tavaris Jackson to Ben Obomanu and trimmed the Falcons lead to two points. Unfortunately, on the next Falcons possession, their next drive made it into Seahawks territory but two crucial dropped passes from Roddy White made the Falcons punt the ball to Seattle. The Seahawks drove the ball as far as the Falcons (44) yard line with less than :20 seconds remaining in the game; however, after a missed third down conversion, Seattle sent out their field goal kicker to attempt a (61) yard field goal; but, the attempt was missed and Atlanta earned their first road win of the season.

STANDOUT PLAYERS OF THE GAME:

1.MATT RYAN
After a tough lost last week and taking many shots in the first three weeks of the season, Matt Ryan played his best game of the season as he was (28-41), threw for (291) yards and one touchdown pass. In this game, Ryan made a lot of great decisions on offense and played like the confident quarterback that Falcons fans know of the fourth year quarterback.Another key component the Ryan showed today was his mobile awareness today as he rushed for (4) carries and (26) yards as he made some clutch rushes to keep the Falcons alive on a few possessions during the game. For the first time this season, the Falcons offense did not have a turnover and showed the potential of being a great offense for the rest of the NFL season. Today's game was a tremendous effort by Ryan and he kept the Qwest Field crowd from affecting his game.

2. JULIO JONES:
As I stated earlier this week in my preview blog, one of the key match-ups that would be key to a Falcons victory was the Julio Jones vs Brandon Bowner match and today, this was a huge factor in securing an Atlanta victory. Jones, coming off his first career (100) yard receiving game of his career in the loss against Tampa Bay, impressed fans with (11) catches for (127) yards, including a huge (45) yard reception on a key offensive drive. Today's game showed that Jones could be a huge addition to the Atlanta offense and he makes it tough for opposing defenders to double-team Roddy White or Tony Gonzalez. Jones played a tremendous game and as the season goes on, expect the rookie receiver to become more productive to the Atlanta passing attack.

3.MICHAEL TURNER:
Another key point that was mentioned in my previous blog was in order for the Falcons to get their offense going into full effect, the production of the running game and Michael Turner must have an huge game to secure an Atlanta victory and he did. Turner had (26) carries for (70) yards and (2) rushing touchdowns. He also caught (2) passes for (18) yards and made an impact on the Falcons offense early in the game to spark them to an early, commanding lead. In the second half, Turner was not so productive, but his first half efforts played a key factor to why the Falcons passing offense had a major impact against the Seahawks defense. Turner, whether many Falcons fans wants to admit it or not, is the bread and butter to the success of the Atlanta Falcons and with his production, this is one of the toughest teams to beat in the NFL.

4. FALCONS OFFENSIVE LINE:
Through the first three weeks of their season, this unit have been one of the worst in the NFL. Coming into the game, Atlanta surrendered (13) quarterback sacks and costed many offensive mistakes, but against the Seahawks today, they did not surrender a sack and gave Matt Ryan the time to make a huge impact on the Falcons game and sparked them to a much needed win. Next week, the unit will face a tough Green Bay defense; however, this game was a step in the right direction for the offensive line.

THINGS THAT MUST BE ADJUSTED NEXT WEEK:

1.Defensive Consistency:
In the first half, the Falcons dominated the Seahawks and if it wasn't for a touchdown scored on a offsides penalty, they would have posted a shutout against the offense. Atlanta's defense surrendered a 20 point lead in the second half and Tavaris Jackson, who struggled through most of the regular season to this point, had one of his best games of his career as he was (25/38), threw for (319) yards, and (2) touchdown passes. Also, in the second half, the Seahawks were (6-7) on third downs and kept some crucial drives alive for their team and two of their touchdown passes were due to busted coverage from the Falcons secondary. As a unit, the defense must mentally remain focused for the entire game and once your offense gives you a commanding lead to maintain, you must remain consistent and don't allow your opponent to gain any momentum. Another issue is the conservative defensive plays which allows the secondary to give up short passes and keep their drives alive. Next week against the Packers, the Falcons must bring an aggressive gameplan and limit Aaron Rodgers from having a huge game.

2. Special Teams Decisions:
The Falcons were close to surrendering two special team touchdowns to Leon Washington because the coverage was terrible today and also placed them in position to score some crucial points in the second half. Also, Matt Bosher is the wrong option as our kicker for kickoffs because one of his kicks went out of bounds and gave the Seahawks the field position to trim the lead and on his punts, Bosher is not producing effective punts to limit the opposition from having an opportunity to place themselves in great position on offense. Also, Eric Weems is starting to become an issue for the Atlanta special teams unit. Through his first four games, Weems, the former Pro Bowl kick returner, have been ineffective towards helping the Falcons gain better field position in each game and as a returner, your job is to put your team in the best field position and he is having a huge problem of doing that for the Falcons.

3. Dropped Passes:
In the past two weeks, some of the Falcons wide receivers, in particular, all-pro Roddy White have dropped some key passes in the fourth quarter of the game. Today, White had a good first half posting (6) receptions for (78) yards; however, on the final two possessions, his ball control started to slip away as he couldn't complete two catches on the final Falcons possession which forced them to punt the ball and give Seattle another offensive drive and a chance to complete the comeback. The dropped passes from White makes it the second week in a row that he had a tough time making clutch receptions in the fourth quarter as he dropped two potential touchdown receptions in the loss against the Buccaneers last week. Against Green Bay, White must return to his form of being one of the best receivers in the NFL and avoid making silly mistakes that could cost an offensive drive to stall for the Falcons or the opportunity to win the game.

4. Conservative Play Calling:
After having a great first half on offense, the Falcons only scored six points in the second half and most of their plays were a bit too conservative and allowed the Seahawks defense to gain momentum. Also, the Falcons were (3-7) on third down percentage in the second half after having a great first half of offense. Another problem is some of the calls that offensive coordinator Mike Mularkey used against Seattle prevented the weapons of the Atlanta offense to continue their dominance in the football game and the momentum as a team slipped away after the very conservative approach to the game. The Falcons did a great job by not committing one offensive turnover; however, you still want to make the necessary plays in order to prevent the opponents from having a chance to rally. Against Green Bay, the conservative gameplan must be adjusted and they should allow themselves to balance their offensive attack in order to earn a home win.

FINAL THOUGHTS:
This was one of your typical Atlanta Falcons nailbiter games; however, they can not depend on blowing huge leads and trying to force a stop in the later parts of a football game. As a team, the Falcons are still searching for their identity as a football team and they are going to improve as the season continues and the playoff stretch starts appearing. The Falcons earned a very ugly victory today; however, they came through in a much needed win and will return home for two games against the Packers and the Panthers. On Thursday, I will post the preview to the Packers-Falcons game. Until then, FALCONS RISE UP!!!

Georgia Bulldogs vs Mississippi State Bulldogs Recap and Analysis

The Georgia Bulldogs (2-2) entering the game, was returning home after earning their first SEC win of the season against Ole Miss last week to play the Mississippi State Bulldogs, also (2-2) who has yet to win an SEC game. UGA was seeking revenge after dropping a tough game against this team last season. Mississippi State opened up the game with possession; however, the Dawgs defense held them to a quick three and out after Cornelious Washington made a huge sack on Chris Relf. Georgia star corner back Brandon Boykins got a huge (30) yard punt return to put the Bulldogs deep in Mississippi State territory to their 33 yard line. Georgia's offense capitalized on the three-play, (33) yards drive with a (21) yard touchdown pass from Aaron Murray to Orson Charles to put Georgia up 7-0. Mississippi State responded by driving into UGA territory; however, they would settle for a (42) yard field goal to cut Georgia's deficit to 7-3. After both teams went three and out, Mississippi State made a terrible punt which placed the Bulldogs at the MSU 22 yard line. Once again, the Bulldogs would capitalize with a four play, (22) yard drive which ended with a (6) yard touchdown pass from Aaron Murray to Malcolm Mitchell to put Georgia up 14-3 late in the first quarter. In the second quarter, the Georgia Bulldogs threw two interceptions and the Mississippi State Bulldogs failed to capitalize and was forced to punt on each possession. However, shortly after the second Aaron Murray interception, the Georgia defense came up with their first turnover of the game with a Samuel Commings pick to give the Bulldogs the football at their own 19- yard line. Georgia capitalized with an eight-play, (81) yards drive that finished with an Carlton Thomas (7) yard touchdown to give the Bulldogs an commanding 21-3 lead at home, which they carried into halftime. In the third quarter, after both Georgia and Mississippi State traded punts, on the ensuing punt for Mississippi State, their punter fumbled the snap and placed UGA deep in their territory at the 12-yard line. Georgia's offense could not capitalize on the play after a botched snap. After both teams traded possessions again, UGA made a huge play when Sanders Commings recovered a fumble and placed Georgia in good field position at the Mississippi State 15-yard line and would settle for a (27) yard field goal from Blair Walsh to put the Georgia Bulldogs up 24-3. In the fourth quarter, Mississippi State started making their first big drive since scoring a field goal early in the game and made it down to the UGA 24-yard line; however, a penalty and a loss of yards forced Mississippi State to go for it on 4th down and they failed to convert the Chris Relf pass. As the Georgia Bulldogs were driving, Mississippi State came up with a interception from Darius Slay who made a (72) yard return for a touchdown to cut the deficit to 24-10. UGA ran the clock out and earned an interception late in the game from Shawn Williams as the Georgia Bulldogs won 24-10 and improved to 3-2 on the season and sits at 2-1 in the SEC. Now, I will give some of my standouts in this game for the Georgia Bulldogs today.

STANDOUTS IN THE WIN:

1. CORNELIOUS WASHINGTON
On the first Mississippi State possession, Washington set the tone for the defense by earning a sack on Chris  Relf and the early defensive momentum would carry over for the rest of the day for the Georgia Bulldogs. Throughout the game, the junior outside linebacker was giving Mississippi State's offensive line and Relf fits as he brought some intense pressure to interrupt the opponent's game plan. Washington would end the day with two sacks and both of them came at a time of the game when the Bulldogs needed a clutch play and to spark their successful game as a defense.

2. MALCOLM MITCHELL
Mitchell, the freshman wide receiver was huge for Aaron Murray and the Georgia offense early in the game with his clutch receptions on 3rd down and his early touchdown reception to put Georgia up 7-0 in the first quarter. Mitchell lead the team with (5) receptions and (60) yards with a touchdown catch. The freshman is starting to form a chemistry with Murray as the season progresses for UGA. He was also a key player in last week's win over Ole Miss as he made (3) receptions for (93) yards and kept Georgia's offense together as they earned a road win. This is just the beginning of a great career as a Georgia Bulldogs wide receiver if he continues to produce like this for the remainder of the season.

3. ISAIAH CROWELL
The freshman sensation is continuing to impress all UGA fans and is showing the promise and  potential of being one of the next best running backs around the nation. Today, Crowell continued his impressive rookie campaign as he had (22) carries, (104) rushing yards, and a (4.7) yards per carry average. Crowell surpassed the 100-yard mark as a running back for the third time this season and is getting better week after week for the Georgia offense. Currently, Crowell's (411) rushing yards is ranked in the Top 25 of running backs around the nation which is very impressive for this young man in his first season as a Bulldog. As the season progresses, Crowell will continue to make a huge impact on Georgia and he will become one of the best runners in the SEC and around the country.

4. GEORGIA'S DEFENSIVE UNIT
After surrendering more than 30 points in their first two losses against South Carolina and Boise State, the Georgia defense have continued to improve and is going to get better each week as the amount of points surrendered have decreased dramatically over the last three weeks. Today, despite the Mississipi State defense scoring an interception for a touchdown, Georgia's defense held the offense to only (3) points. UGA's defense recorded (3) turnovers, (213) total yards of offense, (4-15) on third down conversions, and made the entire day difficult for Chris Relf and the Missisippi State offense. Next week, the UGA defense will face another task when they face off against the Tennessee Volunteers.

THINGS TO IMPROVE NEXT WEEK:

1.AARON MURRAY TURNOVER RATIO
Despite throwing two first-half touchdown passes, Aaron Murray would throw three interceptions  in the second half, including one that went for a touchdown late in the fourth quarter. Murray finished the day (13-25), with (160) passing yards, (2) touchdowns, and (3) interceptions. Aaron Murray must make better decisions in the pocket because against some of the dominant SEC teams, those mistakes could turn into game-changing opportunities and could cause Georgia to suffer an ugly loss. Against Tennessee, the somphmore quarterback can not make crucial mistakes in the tough environment in Knoxville or that could help the Volunteers pull off an upset win next weekend.

2. BLAIR WALSH FIELD GOAL ACCURACY
Walsh, who is still one of the best kickers in the nation have struggled the past two weeks against Ole Miss and Mississippi State. Last week, Walsh was (2/5) in the win and also missed a 48-yard field goal today, which is unlike the veteran kicker. He will be in good shape; however, these misses can not become consistent as we take on Tennessee, Auburn, Florida, and Georgia Tech because that will hurt you in close football games.

3. PLAY CALLING IN THE SECOND HALF:
After the Bulldogs jumped out to a 21-3 lead, in the 3rd and 4th quarter, Mike Bobo presented a very conservative offense and failed to score any touchdowns. Against competitive teams, you must continue to dominate with your offense throughout the game, because if you change the entire pace of your offense due to having a lead, you can spark momentum for the opponents and that could lead to a lack of consistency for your offense and could help a comeback win occur because in college football, anything can happen.

FINAL THOUGHTS:
Georgia looked like a focused football team today and after struggling to open the season, they are looking like a well-prepared team as they leave for their road trip to Tennessee, Vanderbilt, and Florida. A successful road trip could spark something special for the Georgia Bulldogs heading into November and as the season progresses, I expect to see the entire team playing their best football heading into the tough stretch of a college football season. Next week, UGA goes on the road to play the Tennessee Volunteers and will look to earn a road victory. Until next week, GO BULLDOGS!!!
