Getting to Know: Falcons CB Dominique Franks

Dominique Franks in 2010 vs the Cardinals
Today, I met up with second year corner back from the Atlanta Falcons, Dominique Franks. Franks, entering his second season is destined for a breakout year as he battles Chris Owens for the nickel corner back position on the Falcons heading into the regular season. Throughout the off-season and early into preseason, Franks has impressed  Falcons fans and the coaches with his maturity level and growth as a corner in just his second season. Some of his biggest moments so far was making two huge punt returns of  44 yards and 38 yards to set the Falcons in position to win the Dolphins game. Also, his ability to read routes and defend has given Franks the opportunity to start against the Jaguars last week and this upcoming week against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Before they left for Pittsburgh,we met up at Fox Sports Grill at Atlantic Station.  Here is the interview that took place between me and Franks today.

1. We see you on the field weekly on game days, but tell us who is Dominique Franks away from the football field???
Franks: Away from the football field, my family and teammates will tell you that I am a funny, but also a cool and laid back guy and I am always in a positive mood. Even though there are days when I get discouraged, I always try to stay positive through any circumstances.

2.What was your initial reaction the moment you were drafted by the Atlanta Falcons last season??
Franks: It was a lot of relief for me. As a young kid, I went through some tough experiences but when I turned 11 years old, watching my mom struggle from paycheck to paycheck, I told my mom that my dream would come true and she would never have to work another 9-5 job so when I got the call from the Falcons, it was one big party for my family and I. Before they selected me in the draft, the Falcons called me before they took me and informed me that I was going to be selected as a Falcons corner. I didn't believe it until I saw my name go across the screen and when my name was announced, it became one big party.

3. Did you experience any setbacks on your journey to the NFL??
Dominique Franks vs the Dolphins
Franks: Yes, I actually had a lot of setbacks in my personal life; however, I never questioned the works of God and going through those things made me a better man today. One of the biggest setbacks I experienced in my life was at the age of 15, losing my stepfather. He was the only father figure I had growing up and it unfortunately happened when I was getting close to him because now I was at the age where I knew he was not my biological father so I gave him a hard time and basically had the mindset of "He can't tell me what to do", but he was there daily to make sure my mom and I didn't hurt for anything.  Another tough thing was losing my dad, despite the fact that we would spend some weekends together, the month prior to his death was when my father and I really began to get close. We lived in different cities so he came to my city for a biker show in the local area and at that particular show, he lost his best friend. After that death, he developed a better relationship with God and he stopped cheating and selling drugs. He began to do everything he could to get his life back in order and we developed a better relationship. We started talking everyday; however, the night before he died, he rushed me off the phone which was unusual because we would talk for a long time so I didn't get the opportunity to tell him that "I love him". I also received a call from the University of Tennessee offering me a full ride to play football for them prior to our final conversation. When I received the news the next day, it was a week after my birthday and was another huge setback.

4. How did you overcome your obstacles and who were your main inspirations throughout your life?
Franks:I am so thankful for my family for being here in my life because if I didn't have my mom, I would be dead or in prison today but luckily, I had a great supporting cast around me and they helped shape me into the man that I am today.

5. Heading into the 2011 season, what improvements have you noticed in yourself and with the Falcons???
Franks against the Patriots in 2010
Franks: My maturity level. Being able to sit out my rookie season and watch how veterans such as Brent Grimes, Dunta Robinson, Thomas Decoud works hard and is able to perform at the highest level because your performance in the NFL is more valuable than your work ethic as a college football player. Week in and week out, you are playing someone who has kids, or married and they have to take care of many people so the games mean a lot more and you can develop with practice. You have to gain the mindset to study hard, train harder, and you have to put in perspective everything you have to do because in the NFL, it's not a game anymore but it is your job. As far as the Falcons point of view, everyone is a year older. We got most of our key players back this season and acquired some great additions in Julio Jones, Akeem Dent, but basically we are trying to build on the impact that we made in the 2010 season. We were 13-3 and the NFC South Champions and play our hardest and take it each day at a time. We can't allow a team to come out and be better on us that day so just our overall mindset and maturity will be a huge difference for our team.

6. In my previous blogs, I mentioned you as one of my breakout players this season. What can Falcons fans expect from you in 2011?
Franks: I don't want people to think I have a big head, but you can expect for me to work harder this time and make an impact this season and that is pretty big from my position and I will go out there and continue to learn from the guys who I play with on the field this season and I hope to make a lot of big plays on Sunday afternoons to help our teams come out with a victory.

7.Looking at the 2011 regular season, which team are you looking forward to playing against this season?
Franks: Actually, I have two teams who I am excited to face and they are the New Orleans Saints and the Houston Texans. I am ready to face the Saints because the wide receiver named Robert Meachem, who is from Tulsa, Oklahoma and a lot of trash talk went on between us from the defensive back versus receiver battle and that will be special for me because Meachem is the same guy I looked up to and admired how he conducted himself in high school and college and during the off-season, I was finally able to get in contact with him and help assist his camp, which was a big thing for me and we have been talking a lot of trash among us. My reason for facing the Houston Texans is due to receiver Jacoby Jones. Jones also worked the camp along with Meachem and myself and they were double-teaming me about our matchup this season. They don't really look at the Saints-Texans matchup as they do the Falcons-Texans or Falcons-Saints match ups this season so I am definitely looking forward to facing them this season.

8. What message do you have for anyone with goals or aspirations to make it into the NFL?
Franks: My message is not just for the NFL but for anyone in life that has a dream. Just work as hard as you can and don't let anybody tell you what you can and can not do. Nobody can write the story of your life but you and no matter what you go through, always remain focused despite any positive or negative situation because you can make all situations into a positive one and it will make you work even harder. The moment when I became a man was when I was 15 and I picked my mom up off the floor from crying shortly after my stepfather died. I took on the responsibility to take care of her but you must believe in yourself and show that you can come out on top. Despite all of my trials and tribulations, I am a walking testimony that made into the NFL, you know I may not be a doctor but you can look at my situation as "If he can make it, so can I". If you know that you can do something, you should put your mind to it and don't let anyone tell you that can't make it.

FINAL THOUGHTS:
After doing this interview with Franks, I must say that his mom and all of his family did a tremendous job raising him into the successful and inspiring young man that he is today. He used his story as a symbol of motivation to succeed in life not only as a NFL player, but a true role model to some of these young men out here. If this interview did not change your mind on Dominique Franks, then I honestly don't feel that you are giving him a solid chance to inspire your life and become a inspirational speaker to this generation. At the age of 23, I expect great things in his future and he will continue to be blessed whether it's in the NFL or life in general. This interview was one of the best and most inspiring interviews I have ever seen from a young man such as Franks and I hope all Falcons fans respect this man after this post. Until next time, FALCONS RISE UP!!!

Falcons-Jaguars Recap and Analysis from the Game

Matt Ryan takes a snap
The Falcons played their first road game of the NFL preseason down in Jacksonville. Both offenses struggled early in the game as Atlanta had to settle for three points on a couple of possessions; however, the Jaguars starting offense struggled and made two turnovers. The Falcons and Jaguars split field goals until Harry Douglas caught a pass and turned it into an exciting 76-yard touchdown pass to extend the Falcons lead to 10-3 before halftime. At the beginning of the second half, the Falcons second unit lead the team down into Jacksonville territory but penalties halted the drive and instead of having a touchdown, the drive would end with a Matt Bryant field goal to give them a 13-3 lead. After the Jaguars took over, Blaine Gabbert put the Jags in field goal range where Josh Scobee nailed a 52 yard field goal to cut the defecit to a 7 point Falcons lead. On the ensuing kickoff, Antone Smith made a costly fumble and the Jags would take over deep in Falcons territory; but, they settled for another field goal and cut the lead to 4 points. After a couple of three and outs by both the Jaguars and the Falcons, the Jaguars would move the ball down the field and take the lead as third string quarterback Luke Mccown threw the game winning touchdown to Armon Binns to lift the Jaguars to a 15-13 win. The Falcons dropped to 0-2 in pre-season; however, I will offer my analysis of the things I saw out on the field in the game today.

1. Dominique Franks night
Dominique Franks vs MIA last week
After shocking the home crowd with his punt returns and getting the chance to start in a game today, Falcons fans wanted to see what the second year corner offered for the defense. At first, Franks had a tough time adjusting and even tripped on one play during the first quarter; however, Franks recovered from a sluggish start and had an overall good game at corner back tonight. Franks recorded 5 tackles to lead the defense and Franks did not give up a completion of more than 5 yards for the remainder of the game. He also played good and tight coverage on the Jaguars receivers to prevent them from having a impact on the game. Franks is getting the hang of playing a lot in the Falcons system; however, he continues to impress all of the coaches, fans, and even received credit from the announcers on NFL on Fox. As the weeks progress, expect him to improve as a football player.

2. Brent Grimes impressive at corner tonight
Grimes after an INT
Many Falcons fans love the abilities and the heart that the young corner displays whenever he is on the field. Early on the first possession for the Jaguars, David Garrard decided to take a chance down the field; however, Grimes tipped the first pass intended for Mike Thomas. Later in the same drive, Garrard would take another shot towards the end zone but this time, Grimes made a interception and returned it 62 yards to place the Falcons in position to take the early 3-0 lead for the Falcons. Brent Grimes, who recently signed a 1-year tender for Atlanta, continues his impressive pre-season by recording two interceptions and is showing Falcons fans everywhere that he will continue to dominate at his position this season. Expect another great season for the fourth year cornerback.

3. Jason Snelling looks good early
Snelling in 2010
Snelling, the backup running back who recently re-signed with the Falcons, showed Atlanta fans that he will still be a key component to the Falcons running game. He made one rush for (11) yards and one completion for (3) yards. The numbers do not tell how important Snelling is to this Falcons offense because he relieves Michael Turner from making too many carries and he is a great pass-receiving running back. Snelling will continue to be a key portion of the Falcons three-back attack. Jason Snelling will continue to be the physical compliment to Michael Turner and I expect another productive season from this running back. Snelling, who is currently in his contract season, will provide a impact for the Falcons offense throughout the regular season.

4. Joe Hawley and Sam Baker struggled to stop the Jags defensive line
Falcons offensive line
Despite some impressive efforts from the starting unit, the reason for Matt Ryan and the Falcons offense was the horrible blocking from two offensive lineman on the left side to protect the quarterback. Not only did Baker and Hawley struggle, the Falcons were under 50 percent on 3rd downs during the game and the Falcons struggle to convert any possessions that were longer than 10 yards and the Jaguars defensive line was able to get to Ryan and distract him from having any huge impact on the game in the first half. Also, Sam Baker was the victim of a few false-start penalties that proved costly in some of the Falcons offensive drives. Expect Mike Smith and the Falcons coaching staff to work on reducing the offensive line mistakes and providing better protection for Matt Ryan and the offense. Hawley was playing for an injured Todd Mcclure last night; however, this was his opportunity to impress the Falcons coaching staff as the backup center and he failed to do that during the game. In total, the Falcons offensive linemen counted for six penalties and (54) penalty yards. This is only preseason; however, this is an issue that must be addressed before the Falcons season begin.

5. Calls on 3rd down can't be too predictable
Matt Ryan during the 1st half with Mike Smith
One of the toughest things about last season's playoff loss to Green Bay was that one of our plays, the QB rollout, was easily read and turned into an offensive turnover; however, at a point in the 1st half, the play was used and the Jaguars defense was completely prepared and this caused early 3 and out opportunities for the Jags to keep the Atlanta offense off the field. Also, during the 1st half, Mike Mularkey called some interesting plays on short-yardage situations and it was tough for Matt Ryan to run the offense tonight. Expect for the coordinator and Matt Ryan to use another group of plays to increase the 3rd down percentage for the Falcons offense.

6. Run defense impressive throughout the game
The Falcons on defense
Throughout the entire game, the Falcons defense did not allow the Jaguars to establish a running game for their offense and it caused their offense to struggle for most of the game. The Falcons defense held the Jaguars rushing game to (26) carries, (56) yards, and averaged (1.9) yards per carry. The rushing defense was not one of the best in the NFL last season; however, in this game, we saw a difference in the Falcons ability to prevent the running game from becoming effective and causing an impact on the game.

7.Chris Owens struggling again
Chris Owens
Chris Owens is one of the Falcons players who have been in a battle race; however, after his first two weeks of preseason, not only could he lose the battle of becoming the nickel corner back for the Falcons, he could also be a free agent next week. Owens have been the target of many opposing defenses throughout the playoffs last season and in pre-season as he have surrendered two touchdowns. With these efforts, his future is uncertain but if he remains an Atlanta Falcon throughout the pre-season, his defensive efforts need to improve because the first set of cuts begin on Tuesday and Owens is not guaranteed to make the cuts.

8. Harry Douglas makes a huge impression
Harry Douglas runs for a touchdown
As I mentioned in a previous blog, Harry Douglas would become a huge factor for the Falcons offense this season after making a full recovery from the knee injury he suffered in the 2009 off season. Last week, Douglas impressed the Falcons coaches and fans by making a 20-yard touchdown reception between two defenders in the preseason opener against the Dolphins. Douglas would end that game with (3) receptions for (48) yards and a touchdown. With the offense struggling for most of the first half, Matt Ryan threw a pass to Harry Douglas on 3rd down and Douglas used his speed and play-making abilities to turn a short reception into an explosive 76-yard touchdown pass to put the Falcons up 10-3. Douglas would finish the game leading all Falcons receivers with (2) receptions for (86) yards and continues to show the Falcons fans that he have completely healed from injury and will play a huge factor for the Falcons offense this season. Expect Harry Douglas to become one of the unsung heroes in the receiving core for Matt Ryan and the Falcons offense once the season begins.

9. Jacquizz Rodgers looked very impressive during the game
Rodgers during the Jaguars game
After the Falcons took Rodgers in the NFL Draft, many Falcons fans were excited due to his change of pace abilities and he provides an explosive factor to the physical running game that Michael Turner and Jason Snelling provides to the Falcons rushing attack. Rodgers, whose height is (5-6) and weighs (190) pounds, however, he did not impress the scouts by running a (4.64) in the 40-yard dash of the NFL combine and caused him to slip to the Falcons in the 5th round of the NFL Draft. Rodgers, did not see much time in the opener against the Dolphins; but, in this game against the Jaguars, he lead the team with (7) carries for (39) yards in the game. Rodgers also had a touchdown that was waived from an offensive holding penalty, but, he proved to the Falcons last night that he could provide a spark for the running game and reduce Turner's carries during the games this season. Expect Jacquizz Rodgers to have a impact on the Falcons offense this season and continue to provide an explosive factor for the team.

10. Chris Redman impressed as the Falcons backup quarterback
Chris Redman takes a snap in the 3rd
Chris Redman, who was Matt Ryan's backup throughout Ryan's entire career in Atlanta, looked impressive last night and displayed his experience as a veteran quarterback. Redman was (10-14) on the night for (76) passing yards and lead the Falcons down the field deep into Jaguars territory; however, due to the offensive penalties, the Falcons had to settle for a field goal. Redman, the 9th year veteran, guaranteed himself the backup quarterback position after his impressive performance. Chris Redman can continue to help Matt Ryan grow as a quarterback and also give him some tips to help elevate his game throughout the season.

11. Cliff Matthews impresses on the defensive line
Cliff Matthews during the Dolphins game
Matthews, the Falcons seventh round pick, did a good job pressuring Blaine Gabbert last night and preventing him from having a huge impact on the game. Matthews came away with a tackle; however, he was pressuring the Jaguars and forced Gabbert to throw an incompletion after he almost made a sack in the 3rd quarter and he would tip a pass that came close to being intercepted by Dominique Franks. Matthews is currently battling to remain on the team as a defensive end during the season. Continue to watch Matthews throughout the pre-season because if he continues to impress on the defensive line; he could beat Chauncey Davis as the fifth defensive end on the Falcons defense.

12. Peria Jerry impresses on the defensive line
Peria Jerry
Peria Jerry, the first round pick in the 2009 draft, who is coming off another injury has impressed the coaches for his effectiveness for the Falcons rushing defense. Jerry was limiting the Jaguars running game from having any major impact on the game; however, he was injured early in the first quarter. Despite suffering an early injury, Jerry came back and played impressive and even came up with a critical sack in the 4th quarter last night and caused the Jaguars to punt after the offensive possession. Expect Peria Jerry to continue and impress on the Falcons defensive line and if Jerry can stay healthy, he will be a huge factor for the defensive besides Jonathan Babineaux. The third year defensive tackle will battle with second year tackle Corey Peters who was very impressive throughout the 2011 season and will continue to pressure Jerry for the starting defensive line position along with Jonathan Babineaux. The Jerry and Peters battle will be one of the strongest battles to watch throughout the pre-season and heading into the regular season.

FINAL THOUGHTS:
The Falcons looked impressive; however, I expect some key changes to be made as the season approaches on the offensive line and in the secondary. Atlanta could make a move and acquire a corner back from the free agency to replace Chris Owens if the third year cornerback continues to struggle against opposing receivers. There are two battles that I will keep my eyes on heading into next week against the Steelers, which is the Jerry-Peters and Matthews-Davis matchup. Peria Jerry is expected to start; however, the Falcons can't ignore how effective Corey Peters was during his rookie season and he should be offered a legitimate shot to prove himself in his second season on the defense. Against the Steelers next week, I feel that this matchup will  be one of the main ones to watch. My second matchup could cause a defensive end to miss making the 2011 Falcons roster, which is Cliff Matthews and Chauncey Davis. Cliff Matthews, as I stated earlier, looked good and was bringing pressure to the Jaguars defense and I feel that he will be tested again next week to see can he apply the same pressure to the Steelers. Chauncey Davis, who is entering his sixth season as a Falcons defensive end, was nor challenged for many years; however, with the addition of Ray Edwards to the team, there are four players who are guaranteed to make the roster: John Abraham, Ray Edwards, Kroy Biermann, and Laurence Sidbury. With those four spots set, the Falcons have to make a decision between Matthews and Davis; however, if Davis don't provide an impact this pre-season, he could be released not only for the lack of effort, but for the amount of salary cap space he could release for Atlanta to make another move before the season begins. Until next week, this was your Falcons recap and analysis on the game. RISE UP!!!!

Atlanta Falcons Wide Receiver Expectations for 2011

Roddy White after his touchdown vs the Saints
In 2010, despite the Falcons going 13-3 on the season and posting great offensive numbers, their main two receivers were All-Pro receiver Roddy White and tight end Tony Gonzalez. Roddy White, despite being double teamed in many games last season, established Falcons franchise records in receiving yards and with the most receptions last season. White, the sixth year receiver from UAB, ranked 2nd in the NFL in receiving yards (1,389) and led the league with (115) receptions which earned him another Pro Bowl appearance for the NFC. Tony Gonzalez, the 13th year tight end, ranked second on the Falcons with (70) receptions, (656) receiving yards, and caught (6) touchdowns. Despite having great numbers for the Atlanta offense, in the final two losses of the season against New Orleans and Green Bay, the opposing defense played tight coverage on both of these receivers and reduced their production. Also, excluding those two players, the remainder of the Falcons receiving core which consisted of Brian Finneran, Michael Jenkins, and Harry Douglas provided a small portion of the passing offense for Atlanta last season. After the Falcons playoff loss to Green Bay, Thomas Dimitroff and the front office wanted to remain a physical offensive team; however, they wanted to add some explosive targets on the team in 2011. In the 2011 NFL Draft, the Falcons traded up 21 spots to draft Julio Jones, the rookie wide receiver from Alabama, to help their offense become balanced and provide a deep ball threat for Matt Ryan. Now, I will speak about each of the Falcons receivers and give the expectations for them in 2011.

RODDY WHITE
Roddy White's TD reception in 2009
Roddy White have emerged as one of the top receivers around the league today. In his last four seasons as a Falcons receiver, Roddy have posted four 1,000+ yard seasons for the offense and also went to the Pro Bowl for the last three seasons. White is also Matt Ryan's top target and was clutch in many late game situations for the Falcons in 2010 including scoring the game-winning touchdown against the Ravens and also making a clutch reception on 3rd and 20 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on the way towards scoring  the game winning touchdown. White continues to provide mismatches for opposing defenses and with the new additions to the Falcons offense, the challenge of covering one of the top receivers in the NFL will get tougher.

EXPECTATIONS: White's numbers could decrease; however, his game changing abilities will increase
With the addition of Julio Jones, the opportunity to double cover Roddy White will be limited due to the play-making abilities of the rookie receiver. In 2011, Matt Ryan will have the option to take some chances down the field to him and this will make his ability to make big plays during the game and provide a bigger impact for the Falcons passing offense. Roddy White's numbers could decrease due to the different options that the Atlanta offense will have with Julio Jones, Harry Douglas, and Kerry Meier, which is not a bad thing for the receiving core. With explosive tools for the Atlanta offense, their opponents will have a hard time trying to figure out who Matt Ryan will throw a pass to whenever he runs the offense.

JULIO JONES:
Julio Jones after a reception against Miami
After losing to the Packers in the playoffs, one of the issues the offense showed was their inability to make quick touchdowns from any deficit and that cost them a playoff victory. During the off season, the Falcons front office spent the next few months speaking on becoming more explosive on offense and having the ability to score at a quick rate. In the NFL Draft, Atlanta took Julio Jones, the receiver from Alabama who was one of their biggest targets during his time as a member of the Crimson Tide and also won a national championship   during his time as their receiver. In 2010, Jones posted (75) receptions, (1,133) receiving yards, and (7) touchdowns for Alabama and was a huge target for their offense, in which he provided an explosive, down the field threat for one of the top offenses in the SEC. One of his flaws as a receiver was the amount of dropped passes that happened to him during his 2010 season. During training camp, some of the veterans such as Tony Gonzalez and other NFL experts, were impressed with the young receiver and stated that Jones is the "real deal" for the Falcons offense in 2011. Jones also impressed Falcons fans in the first pre-season game against the Dolphins catching two passes for (43) yards and running a end-around receiver reverse for (12) yards definitely showed Atlanta fans that this receiver could be one of the huge missing pieces for the Falcons receiving core.

EXPECTATIONS: Jones will have a good rookie season and help Atlanta become one of the most explosive offenses in the NFL
After impressing Falcons fans with his play-making abilities for the offense against Miami in the preseason opener, Jones will emerge as one of the explosive young receivers in the NFL today. Many experts are referring to him as the younger version of Randy Moss when he had a stellar season for the Vikings in 1998. Jones will give the Falcons offense and Matt Ryan an opportunity to make big plays at a quicker rate because last season, Atlanta was second to last in the NFL in passing plays of 20+ yards with (32) and ranked 22nd in the NFL with passing plays of 40+ yards with (6). This was the only flaw in the Atlanta Falcons offense in 2010. With Jones addition, this gives Matt Ryan and the offense the opportunity to open their playbook and use him for plays such as quick slants, reverses, and other offensive plays due to his speed and Jones is also able to turn a short gain of 5-10 yards into a big reception of 20-30 yards. Julio Jones will be one of the most exciting rookies to watch in the NFL in 2011.

HARRY DOUGLAS:
Harry Douglas reception in 2008
Heading into his fourth season as a Falcons receiver, the pressure is on Douglas to have a big season for the Falcons offense. Harry Douglas returned in 2010 after suffering a knee injury that sidelined him for the 2009 season; however, Douglas was not the same player that Falcons fans were excited about in his rookie season back in 2008. In 2010, Douglas posted (22) receptions, (296) receiving yards, and one touchdown. Also, Douglas dropped a lot of crucial passes that almost cost the Falcons in close game situations last season. After a full off-season of healing and preparing for the 2011 season, Harry Douglas looked good at Friday Night Lights, training camp, and during the first preseason game, where he caught a 20-yard touchdown pass with two corners defending him to give Atlanta a 17-0 lead over the Dolphins in preseason.

EXPECTATIONS: Harry Douglas will have a career year for the Falcons in 2011
Harry Douglas is fully healed and ready to make big plays for the Falcons offense and will be a huge threat as a slot receiver for the Atlanta offense. In his rookie season, Douglas provided a huge spark for the Falcons and turned small catches into big plays for the passing attack and with his speed, he can provide a mismatch for any corner backs that plays in the nickel spot against him. Like Julio Jones, Douglas possess speed and can turn a simple pass into a huge impact play in a football game. Matt Ryan will have another option to throw  to and Douglas can create big play opportunities for the offense in 2011. Expect a big and productive season from the fourth year receiver.

KERRY MEIER and ERIC WEEMS

EXPECTATIONS:Meier and Weems will be a huge factor in the offense this season
These are two receivers who will receive a bigger role to the Falcons offense in 2011. Meier, who is entering his second season as a Falcons receiver; however, this will be his first time playing in the regular season after suffering a knee injury. Kerry Meier was a well-known receiver from Kansas who Atlanta drafted as a good option to play in the slot position. Meier is not the quickest in the core for the Falcons offense; however, he will run great routes and also make some consistent catches for Atlanta. Another great thing that Kerry Meier showed the scouts during his time at the University of Kansas is his ability to make clutch receptions and his intelligence to create plays for the offense. His intelligence will be a huge factor for Matt Ryan and the Falcons offense. Eric Weems will see his role on the Falcons offense increase in 2011 with the loss of Brian Finneran and Michael Jenkins to the free agency market. Weems, who is well known as a special teams player and a return specialist for the Falcons also is a quick receiver who can turn small catches into big receptions and provide another explosive weapon for Matt Ryan to use during the season. Also, like Julio Jones and HD, you can also run wide-receiver reverses.Atlanta can finally take the next step this season to become the explosive attack that Falcons fans are expecting this season. We are two days away from our second game against Jacksonville, until then, Falcons RISE UP!!!!

Falcons-Dolphins Recap and Analysis

John Abraham after making a INT in the 1st quarter
The Atlanta Falcons opened up one of their most anticipated seasons in franchise history with their first preseason game at the Georgia Dome against the Miami Dolphins. The Falcons starting unit impressed us all by starting out with a 17-0 lead with a two yard rushing touchdown to Michael Turner and a 21-yard touchdown pass from Matt Ryan to Harry Douglas. Also, the Falcons starting defensive unit held the starting Miami Dolphins offense to six total yards and forced two interceptions from John Abraham and Brent Grimes. After the 1st quarter, the Falcons starters rested for the remainder of the game and in the second quarter, Chad Henne and the Dolphins starting unit lead the Dolphins back against the Falcons second team defense with a 44-yard pass to Brian Hartline to cut the lead to 17-7.  After the Dolphins went three and out, the Falcons offense got the ball with less than a minute left before halftime; however, the drive was cut short after Wilson fumbled the football and the Dolphins took over and scored on a 28-yard touchdown pass from Matt Moore to cut the lead to 17-14 at halftime. In the 3rd quarter, the Dolphins opened the game with the ball and their drive was cut short after a Rafael Bush interception. On the next Falcons drive, the second team offense lead by John Parker Wilson moved into field goal range and settled for a Matt Bryant field goal to extend the lead to 20-14. On the next Dolphins possession, Miami drove down the field and Matt Moore connected on his second touchdown of the night to Edmund Gates to put the Miami Dolphins up for the first time in the game 21-20. Early in the fourth quarter, after the Falcons went three and out, the Dolphins punt returner Phillip Livas scored a 75-yard touchdown to extend Miami's lead to 28-20. After the Falcons defense contained the Dolphins and a spark from Dominique Franks in the special teams unit, the Falcons settled for another Matt Bryant field goal to cut the deficit down to 5 points. Atlanta's defense would respond again by stopping the Dolphins offense, and after another big return from Franks, the Falcons moved deep into Miami territory; however, backup quarterback Adam Froman threw a game-ending interception and the Falcons lost 28-23. In this competitive game, there were some Falcons players who impressed the coaching staff and the fans.

1. Julio Jones
Jones making a reception in the 1st quarter
After receiving a lot of criticism throughout the summer for the selection of the rookie wide receiver from Alabama, Jones impressed the fans in the first quarter of the game. Matt Ryan threw a 21-yard completion to Jones to keep one of the touchdown drives going that the Falcons scored in the first half. Also, Julio Jones turned a critical 3rd down and 3 play into an explosive 21-yard reception to extend the offensive drive for Atlanta early in the quarter. Julio Jones also made a 12-yard run on a reverse play to place the Falcons into position to score one of their two touchdowns in the game. Jones showed the Falcons fans and the coaches that he will provide an explosive spark to this offense and he will open up many opportunities for himself throughout the season. Also, Julio Jones will definitely take the double-teams away from Roddy White and Tony Gonzalez. After his performance last night, Falcons fans can expect to see his name in many Atlanta highlights this season and he will become an immediate impact to the Falcons offense.

2. Harry Douglas
Harry Douglas touchdown reception
After a mediocre 2010 season, the fourth year receiver knew that his expectations were very high and the Falcons needed him to emerge as a playmaker this season. Last night, Douglas showed the Falcons fans that he could put together his best campaign as a Falcons receiver this season. Douglas caught three passes for 47 yards, including a 20-yard touchdown pass from Matt Ryan with two Dolphins defenders surrounding him. Harry Douglas will provide a spark for our offense in the slot and he is showing that his recovery from the injury suffered in the 2009 season have successfully ended. Expect Harry Douglas to have a breakout season and give the new Falcons offense an explosive threat down the field and in close-game situations.

3. Dominique Franks
Dominique Franks punt return
In my previous blog, I mentioned that Franks will be a surprise to the Falcons defense this season; however, as of last night, he could become a threat for our special teams unit throughout the regular season. In the fourth quarter, Dominique Franks had two explosive punt returns and placed Atlanta into a position to have a chance to comeback and win their game. Frank's first punt return was a 44-yard play that shocked the Falcons fans and the coaching staff and also placed the offense in position to make a field goal. With less than two minutes remaining, Franks exploded with another major punt return of 38 yards to place Atlanta into scoring position; however, the Falcons could not capitalize on the final possession. Franks, who is entering his second season as a Falcon, barely played in the 2010 season; But, in training camp have emerged as one of the impressive young players on the Falcons. Coach Mike Smith also credited Franks for his maturity level and expects big things out of the second year cornerback from Oklahoma. On defense, Franks also made two tackles and played great coverage and is the front runner to win the third cornerback position on the Falcons defense when the season begins.

FINAL THOUGHTS:
Brent Grimes INT in the 1st quarter
Atlanta's offense will be one of the best in the NFL this season because the Falcons will continue their physical and grind-the-clock style with Michael Turner; however, with Julio Jones and Harry Douglas providing a spark at wide receiver, expect the Falcons to show an explosive passing offense and this young offense will be unpredictable to our opponents because Atlanta can attack your defense with anyone this upcoming season. The Falcons starting defense looked great and Brent Grimes will again provide a huge spark at cornerback for our team and expect many teams to think before they attack this guy because he can make any play at any time of the game. The second unit for the Falcons looked good throughout the defensive line and linebackers; however, the secondary will remain a concern for the defense. Chris Owens, the 3rd year cornerback, must improve his coverage as he was the victim in both touchdown passes in the second quarter from the Dolphins backup unit. Finally, with a surprise spark on special teams from Dominique Franks, a battle between Eric Weems and Dominique Franks as the punt returner could emerge before preseason ends. The Falcons play the Jacksonville Jaguars on August 19th at 8:00 P.M. on FOX. Until next time, FALCONS RISE UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Atlanta Falcons Defense: Expectations for 2011 Season

Falcons defense vs the Ravens
Coming off one of the best seasons in Atlanta Falcons history, the team would not have posted a 13-3 record without the defense. Led by coordinator Brian Van Gorder, the Falcons defense was one of the best 4-3 defenses in the NFL in 2010. Atlanta ranked 5th in the NFL in scoring defense giving up (18) points per game, 3rd in time of possession for the offensive opponents with (28:12) averaged by the opposing teams and limited their amount of offensive production. The Falcons also ranked 4th best in the NFL with interceptions (22) with William Moore and Brent Grimes leading their group with 5 interceptions on the season. Atlanta's defense produced two Pro Bowlers in defensive end John Abraham and Brent Grimes. The Falcons defense was outstanding until the playoffs against the Green Bay Packers who scored 48 points on the defense and ended the magical season for this young team. Heading into the 2011 season, the Falcons defense will be tested by some of the best quarterbacks in the NFL such as Drew Brees, Michael Vick, Matt Schaub, Peyton Manning, and Aaron Rodgers. The Falcons defense will have to conquer the tough schedule ahead in 2011 to take the next step towards winning a Super Bowl. There are three things that you should expect with the Falcons defense in the 2011 season.

1. Expect the Pass Rush to get more sacks in 2011
Falcons new acquisition Ray Edwards
Outside of Pro-Bowler John Abraham having (13.0) sacks for the Falcons defense, he was double-teamed by most of the Falcons opponents and that allowed for the opposing defensive end to provide more of an impact towards quarterbacks; however, defensive ends Kroy Biermann and Chauncey Davis were unsuccessful for majority of the season in applying pressure to the opponents quarterbacks. Also, late in the season against New Orleans and Green Bay, the Falcons defense pressured Drew Brees and Aaron Rodgers; however, they were able to move out of the pocket and still make completions to their offense. This off-season, the Falcons acquired defensive end Ray Edwards from the Minnesota Vikings. Edwards recorded (8.0) sacks this season which was more than every Falcons defensive player except for John Abraham. Ray Edwards will provide the Falcons with another young and effective pass-rusher and prevent opposing offensive lines from focusing on limiting John Abraham's ability to attack the quarterback. The addition of Ray Edwards will also give Kroy Biermann and Chauncey Davis the opportunity to come in the games with a lot of energy and the opportunity to make big plays on the front line for the defense. With an effective pass rush, this will allow the rest of the defense to have a shot at making big plays and end offensive drives for the opponents we will face in 2011.

2. The Falcons rushing defense to make improvements in 2011
Corey Peters against the Steelers
The Falcons rushing defense made some improvements from the 2009 season and ranked 10th in the NFL rushing defense giving up (1,694) yards rushing, the Falcons also finished 8th in NFL for rushing touchdowns allowed only surrendering (9) for the entire season. However, the Falcons did allow some big rushing plays on defense such as the 80-yard Tim Hightower touchdown against the Cardinals, the 50-yard Rashard Mendenhall game-winning touchdown against the Steelers in overtime, and a 60-yard rushing play on a reverse by Brandon Lafell against Carolina. The Falcons will look to improve that portion of their defense as Jonathan Babineaux returns for another season and will continue to cause issues for opposing runningbacks this season. Also, Corey Peters and Peria Jerry should provide some depth at defensive tackle for 2011. Peria Jerry will play his first full season and he looks impressive at Falcons training camp and is locked into a full battle with second year tackle Corey Peters. Peters, played an impressive rookie campaign for the Falcons defense recording (1) sack and made (33) tackles for the defense. Another key contributor towards stopping the opponents' running game will be fourth-year linebacker Curtis Lofton. Lofton, who many viewed as a Pro-Bowl snub for the last four years, posted (118) tackles, recorded (2.0) sacks, and forced (3) fumbles. Lofton will be a key component towards helping the Falcons contain the run. This season, the Falcons will face some of the best runningbacks in the NFL such as Arian Foster, Chris Johnson, and Maurice-Jones Drew so their rushing defense will be up for a challenge to prevent the opponents from having a big day in the rushing category.

3. Expect the pass defense to improve in 2011
William Moore
Last season, the Falcons passing defense was tested in a huge way against some of the biggest opponents that  our defense faced. The Falcons were average around the NFL for a team that posted a 13-3 regular season record. Atlanta ranked 22nd in the NFL for passing yards allowed with (226.6) per game, 28th in the NFL for completion percentage by an opposing quarterback with (65.0) percentage per game, but they were 4th in the NFL for most interceptions with (22). Some of the players who shined in the Falcons secondary was first time Pro-Bowler Brent Grimes and second-year safety William Moore. Grimes, entering his 4th season as the Falcons corner, had a great season in 2010 with a tie for the team lead with (5) interceptions, (23) pass defensed, and (87) tackles which was a great season for the guy who was the most-targeted cornerback in the NFL last season. William Moore, who missed his entire 2009 campaign with a hamstring injury, came back in a strong way in 2010. Moore was a hard-hitting strong safety who shockingly beat veteran safety Erik Coleman during the season and Moore recorded (72) tackles, (5) interceptions, and (8) passes defensed. William Moore was the breakout player for the Falcons defense in 2010. In 2011, expect Brent Grimes and William Moore to continue their effectiveness in the secondary. Also, the Falcons will look to see better results from veteran cornerback Dunta Robinson. Robinson only recorded (1) interception last season and was another target who many quarterbacks that the Falcons faced in 2010 attacked during the regular season and in the playoffs. With a year of experience under his belt as a Falcons corner, he should emerge as one of the impact players in the young Atlanta secondary. With an effective pass rush in 2011, the Falcons secondary will improve and more opportunities for big plays will appear for this portion of the Atlanta defense

Players to Watch in 2011 on the Falcons Defense

1.Dominique Franks
Dominique Franks
Franks, who is entering his second season on the Falcons have shown some a lot of improvement as a corner throughout training camp. Franks is currently battling Chris Owens for the 3rd corner back position on the Falcons; however, after the playoff loss against the Packers, the advantage is looking towards Franks' direction and he will get the chance to show Atlanta fans this season and his coaching staff that he is worthy of winning the job. During Friday Night Lights, Franks impressed the fans and the coaching staff with his excellent awareness and ability to play good coverage on the outside and in the nickel spot for the team. During preseason, the battle between Chris Owens and Franks will intensify; however, Franks will be the favorite to earn the job when the regular season begins. Franks also was credited for the maturity and determination that he is displaying during the early parts of training camp and headed into preseason, many Falcons fans will get their opportunity to evaluate him. Franks, who left college in his junior season from Oklahoma, was one of the best corners in the Big-12 under Bob Stoop's system and with a year of NFL experience under his belt, Franks will continue to improve and emerge as a play making corner for the Falcons defense in 2011. Last season, Franks played in two games and recorded (1) tackle and (1) interception against the Cardinals. With Brian Williams gone in the free agency, expect to see Dominique Franks on the field this season and he will provide a spark for the secondary as he looks to become our nickel cornerback for the regular season.

2. Sean Weatherspoon
Sean Weatherspoon tackles Josh Freeman
Weatherspoon, who the Falcons selected in the 1st round of the 2010 NFL draft, showed some great coverage skills and pass-rushing abilities; however, he was limited due to a shoulder and knee injury that he suffered early in the regular season of his rookie season. Weatherspoon recorded (1) sack and made (42) tackles for the Falcons and some of his tackles came during some huge game situations for the defense. In 2011, expect for Weatherspoon to provide some pressure towards the opposing quarterback and to show some great coverage skills for Atlanta. In his second season, Falcons fans expect some great things about of this young linebacker and will hope to see him breakout as one of the huge impact players for our team in 2011. Like Dominique Franks, Sean Weatherspoon came from the Big-12 conference in college where he was continuously challenged by some of the best quarterbacks in college football such as Chase Daniel, Colt Mccoy and despite the challenges, he rose to the occasion and was a key contributor on the Missouri defense. Weatherspoon will have a great season for this young Falcons defense in 2011 and expect to hear his name on defensive highlights for the Falcons this upcoming season. With Curtis Lofton and Mike Peterson for assistance, Sean Weatherspoon will continue to improve and emerge as one of the best young linebackers in the NFL today.

We are now two days away from the first Falcons preseason game...FALCONS RISE UP!!!!!

Atlanta Dream: Climbing Back to Success in the 2nd Half

Superstar Angel Mccoughtry
Weeks ago, when the defending Eastern Conference champions, Atlanta Dream was 3-9, many fans thought this young and talented team would miss the playoffs after the high expectations were set before the WNBA season. Now, the Atlanta Dream, lead by superstar Angel Mccoughtry, have won 7 of their last 9 games and currently own a 10-11 record and have also moved into the 4th seed of the Eastern Conference for the first time this season. Angel Mccoughtry is a major factor in the Dream's recent success averaging (25.2) points per game, (4.9) rebounds per game, and (2.3) assists per game. In her fourth season, she is carrying Atlanta from behind in the Eastern Conference in dramatic fashion and her efforts saw her win the WNBA Eastern Conference Player of the Month in July. Led by Angel, the Dream is turning a season that looked like it would end way too soon for the Atlanta fans and this team into a season of redemption and the Dream is becoming a scary threat for their opponents as we continue through the month of August.

Armintie Price
Other than Mccoughtry, the Dream have received some key contributors during this comeback season for Atlanta from other starters such as Erika Desouza, Arminitie Price, and Allison Bales. Erika Desouza, the 5th year center from Brazil, has contributed in a huge way during this successful stretch for the Dream on offense and defense. Desouza averaged (12.1) points per game, (7.0) rebounds per game, and (1.4) blocks per game, which is the 2nd highest total in her 5-year career and her key contributions have helped Atlanta in a major way. Armintie Price, the former 6th woman for the Dream, have replaced Izi Castro Marquez in the starting lineup and continues to provide extra energy for the team during their successful run. Over the past 9 games, Price is averaging (8.2) points per game, (1.6) steals per game, and (3.1) rebounds per game. Price's season average of (8.0) points per game is her career best total and the former Rookie of the Year is huge for the Dream and she continues to cause defensive mismatches for the opponents. Allison Bales is another contributor who originally was a bench player, but when Sancho Lyttle left for a small portion of the WNBA season, the Dream turned to her as their option for the season. Bales is contributing in a great way averaging (4.8) points per game, (5.8) rebounds per game, and (2.7) blocks per game. Allison is a key contributor in the paint and provides inside defensive presence against some of their opponents and continues to make big plays when Atlanta needs her the most. Bales is having her 2nd best season as a WNBA center and will continue to provide a huge presence for Atlanta. With the addition of Sancho Lyttle to the Dream lineup, their defensive pressure and intensity have increased and is notably recognized against some of their tough opponents.

Allison Bales

Atlanta will continue their comeback season by playing seven of their next nine games on the road and this stretch will determine their fate towards marching back to the WNBA Finals in 2011. Some of the games they will play are against Diana Taurasi and the Phoenix Mercury, a road battle against the defending WNBA champions Seattle Storm, and back to back games against the Connecticut Sun who currently holds the 2nd seed in the Eastern Conference of the WNBA. Atlanta will look to remain consistent as they maintain a one game lead over the Chicago Sky for the final seed in the competitive WNBA playoffs. Recently, the Dream is the hottest team playing in the 2nd half of the season after battling the injury bug early in their campaign and also after dropping some close games in overtime. Atlanta continues to impress their critics as the 4-year franchise will attempt to make their 3rd postseason appearance in a row. Led by Coach Marynell Meadors, the Dream looks focused on one goal: Returning to the playoffs to bring home the first basketball championship from any team in Atlanta professional sports history. Basketball fans around Atlanta needs to support these young women and come support this team of competitive players as they continue to re-establish their dominance as a WNBA championship contender. Let's Go Dream!!!

Michael Turner Expectations for the 2011 season

Michael Turner scores vs Green Bay
Heading into his fourth season as an Atlanta Falcon, Michael Turner has emerged from the days in San Diego backing Ladainian Tomlinson to becoming one of the best backs in the NFL today. In his three seasons in Atlanta, Turner have rushed for (3,941) yards, recorded (39) rushing touchdowns, and average (4.5) yards per carry, which places him among some of the top runningbacks in Falcons history. Turner's (3,941) rushing yards  moves him into fifth place all-time in Atlanta Falcons history and his (39) touchdowns are now ranked second most in franchise history. Turner also broke other team records such as most rushing yards in a game (220), most touchdowns in a game (4), and most rushing touchdowns in one season (17). Turner's first campaign as a Falcon in 2008 with (1,699) rushing yards was the second most in the NFL that season and ranked third most in Falcons history. Michael Turner is a huge factor for this Atlanta offense and provides the balance for Matt Ryan and the Falcons as a team. Entering the 2011 season, here are my expectations for Michael Turner's fourth season as an Atlanta Falcon.

1. Turner will remain one of the best backs in the NFL and make his 3rd Pro Bowl Appearance

Michael Turner in the NFL playoffs
Michael Turner will continue to be a major part of the Falcons offense despite adding Julio Jones and Jacquizz Rodgers to provide an explosive outlook to this team. Turner's running game is the bread and butter to the success of the Atlanta offense and Turner lead the NFC in rushing last season with (1,371) rushing yards and Turner's offensive line continues to be one of the best in the NFL today and with the best fullback in the NFL, Ovie Mughelli, continuing to block for Michael Turner, his dominance will continue throughout the NFL season. Last season, Turner and the physical offensive line for the Falcons, grinded the clock down and decreased their opponents stamina as Atlanta ranked second in the NFL last season for time of possession in each game by having the ball an average of (32:47) per game. Atlanta's rushing offense ranked 12th in the NFL with (1,891) total rushing yards. This season, Turner will be 100 percent healed from his surgery that he received after an ankle injury in 2008 so his production will improve for the Falcons in 2011. Michael Turner continues to cause issues against many defenses around the league and today and in some of the biggest games this season, he have the opportunity to establish his dominance as a great running back. Some of the teams that are scheduled to face the Falcons have seen Turner post major numbers against their team to lift the Falcons to victory. Against the Saints, Turner averages (74) yards per game with a (4.2) average per carry and when he rushes past the 100-yard mark for the Falcons, Atlanta is 2-0 against their divisional rival. Against other NFC South rivals, Tampa Bay and Carolina, Michael Turner dominates against those teams. Against Tampa, Turner averages (97.2) yards per game and a (4.0) yards per carry average and Atlanta is 4-1 with Turner starting at running back. Michael Turner have posted career numbers against the Panthers defense and in his three years in Atlanta have dominated this team averaging (94.6) yards per game, (5.3) yards per carry, and also set the franchise record with (4) touchdowns in one game against them. As the Falcons face off against some great teams such as Philadelphia, Green Bay, and Indianapolis, he will have to set the tone to place Atlanta in position to win those big games.

2. As Atlanta offense gets very explosive throughout the season, expect Michael Turner's yards per carry to increase.

Michael Turner scores vs GB
After suffering a loss to the Green Bay Packers in the postseason, the Falcons set a mission to keep the balanced and physical team that brought them to a 13-3 record in 2010, but to add a explosive side to the Falcons offense in 2011 in order to display a tremendous amount of balance for the team. With their offense coming together as the season progresses, Michael Turner should average more yards per carry because with the offensive weapons of Julio Jones and Roddy White at receiver, the Falcons will be a very unpredictable team and with the addition of rookie Jacquizz Rodgers as a change of pace back, Turner will be allowed to have some breaks during the game and will have enough stamina in order to make big runs from scrimmage for the Falcons offense. One of the main issues that wondered many Falcons fans and other NFL experts is the amount of carries that Turner receives during the entire season; however, with a balanced attack and a change of pace runner, Turner should catch some time to produce at a higher rate than the previous three seasons for the Falcons. Atlanta's offensive line will pave the way for Michael Turner to continue to impress Falcons fans and provide a mismatch for the opposing defenses this season.

3. Turner will set more records and break current Falcons records for a running back

Michael Turner scores against CAR
Entering his fourth season as the Falcons star rusher, Michael Turner have made his place on the Falcons record book. In 2008, Michael Turner established his mark in team history by becoming the 2nd Falcons running back to finish second in the NFL in rushing (1,699) yards, which only Jamal Anderson and the 1998 Atlanta Falcons would make. Turner achieved his 1st Pro Bowl appearance in 2008 and returned to the Pro Bowl in 2010 as one of the best backs in the league today. Coming into the 2011 season, Michael Turner could inch closer to breaking all Falcons rushing record. Last season, Turner moved past Michael Vick to rank 5th in franchise history for most yards with (3,941) yards and with at least a 1,000 yard rushing season, he could move closer to surpassing Jamal Anderson for 4th all time on the Falcons rushing list. Turner is the only Falcons runningback to surpass 205 yards rushing with a (220) yard rushing game vs the Detroit Lions in 2008 and a (208) yard game vs the St. Louis Rams in 2008. Turner could also break the Falcons record for most rushing yards per carry which was (4.8) in 2009. Michael Turner, who has led the NFL in carries in two of the past three seasons, will look to produce another great season for these Falcons as they continue their quest towards winning the Super Bowl in 2011. In order to establish their offense as explosive, they will need a lot of production out of Michael Turner. FALCONS RISE UP!!!
